The Valley Veterinary Emergency and Referral Center is staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year by dedicated, highly trained and motivated professionals. State of the art treatment and compassionate care of your pet is our ultimate goal. Veterinarians 

Catherine Reiss, DVM
Medical Director

Dr. Reiss received her Bachelor of Science degree in 2001 and her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 2006, both from Cornell University.  She completed an internship in Small Animal Medicine and Surgery at the University of Georgia in 2007, followed by a specialty internship in Small Animal Emergency and Critical Care at Cornell University in 2008.  Dr. Reiss has devoted many years to animal welfare, working with multiple spay and neuter organizations and wildlife care and rehabilitation projects.  She currently volunteers with the Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association’s Field Services, as well as local rescue groups.  Dr. Reiss moved to Virginia in 2009 to become part of the VVERC team and took over as Medical Director in 2010.  Most of her and her husband’s free time are spent playing with their young son and, of course, his feline and canine siblings.  Her other interests include hiking, cooking, and travel.

Jean Loonam, DVM
Dr. Loonam received her Bachelor's degree from Virginia Tech in 1996 and her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Tennessee in 2000. She completed a small animal rotating internship at the Regional Veterinary Referral Center in Springfield VA in 2001, followed by a surgical fellowship at the University of Tennessee in 2002 where her concentration was research and teaching the 4th year students on their emergency and critical care block. She has also worked at a general practice in Middleburg VA and an emergency hospital in Florida. She has been associated with VVERC since 2001.  In her spare time, Dr. Loonam likes to work in her yard, run with her dogs and compete in eventing with her horses.

Roo Makosky, DVM
Dr. Makosky received her BA from St. Mary's College of Maryland in 1992 and graduated from the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine in 1998. After completing an internship in small animal medicine and surgery she returned to Virginia and has been involved with both general primary care practice as well as emergency practice. Her medical interests include pain management, critical care, and geriatrics. She has also completed certification in veterinary acupuncture. Dr. Makosky lives in Fauquier County with her husband and two sons. They share the house with one dog, two indoor cats and five outdoor cats. In her spare time, she enjoys running, gardening, and reading.

Jennifer Lauer, DVM
Dr. Jen Lauer graduated from The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2007.  Prior, she received her bachelor’s degree in Biology/Pre-veterinary Medicine from Clarion University of Pennsylvania in 2001.  After completing veterinary school, she moved to Northern Virginia where she practiced emergency medicine for 3 years.  She has been employed at VVERC since the summer of 2010.  Her medical interests include emergency, critical care, internal medicine and complementary medicine.

Kinga Pall, DVM
Dr. Kinga Pall received her Bachelor of Science degree from Rutgers University in 2002. She received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine in 2008, completing her final year at Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine. She completed a rotating internship in Small Animal Medicine and Surgery in Long Island, NY and a specialty internship in surgery in Pennsylvania. She moved to Virginia in the summer of 2011 and joined VVERC. Her professional interests include both soft tissue and orthopedic surgery. In her free time she enjoys reading, running and traveling.
